Ventral keel wholly or partiallycovered by scales. Long gill rakers. Elongate and narrowteeth with strongly hooked tip and serrations. Gut elongatedand S-shaped with a small anterior loop. Posteriorend of swim bladder round. In river estuaries and slowrivers with low turbidity and vegetation. Maximum age 4years and total length 115 mm. Maturity at 2 years.Spawning from April to July (peak in June), in shallowwaters over a hard bottom at temperatures above 12°C.Spawning in 2-4 stages at intervals of 7-12 days. Eggsadhere to stones or vegetation. Absolute fecundity up to10,000 eggs of 1.4 mm in diameter. Food include crustaceans,flying and aquatic insects, algae, diatoms, and fisheggs and fry.
