Peritoneum black.Snout short and rounded and overlaps the upper lip.Mouth small, inferior and transverse. Lower jaw straightwith a slightly horny cutting edge and no lip. Dorsal andanal fin margin emarginated. Suborbital ring of boneslarge and distinctive, almost as deep as eye. An elongateand almost cylindrical body with a rounded abdomen.Lower jaw with a sharp, crescentic bony edge. Lateralline decurved and running on lower half of caudal peduncle.A pelvic axillary scale and several elongate andoverlapping scales in pectoral axil present. Gill rakersvery short, not touching adjacent one when appressed.Gut very elongate, S-shape and with a small anteriorloop. Favors streams with slow current. Maximum totallength 20 cm. Spawning in summer. Absolute fecundity2,640 yellowish eggs of 0.7 mm in diameter. A carniomnivoreand a voracious feeder.
