Over all color yellowish-white with a lightgrey back. Scale bases on flank above the lateral linebrown. Pectoral and pelvic fins with an orange-yellowspot at their base. Scales on the belly small and skin covered.A naked dorsal keel in front of dorsal fin, althougharea behind occiput may be scaled and groove beginsnearer the dorsal fin. Mouth transverse to more or lesscurved. Dorsal fin spine weak and serrated only half wayor two-thirds of its length. Lives in springs, streams andrivers. Maximum total length 18 cm. Reproduction inJuly-September. Maturity at 2-3 years and 60 mm totallength. Males with large tubercles on snout, and anal fin.Food include phytoplankton, filamentous algae andaquatic insects.
