Over all color pale br own to olivaceous. Finsand belly lighter. A black spot above the pectoral fin andsometimes at base of dorsal fin. Dorsal and anal fins darkerthan other fins. Margin of adipose and caudal fin narrowlyblack. 2-3 narrow, white stripes on flank. Four pairs of longwhitish barbels. Peritoneum silvery to light brown. A strongand serrated spine in dorsal and pectoral fins. Adipose finelongate and strong. Head tapers and mouth subterminal.Maxillary barbel extends back to pectoral fin origin, rarelyto beyond the anal fin. Gill rakers reach second raker or furtherwhen appressed. Vomer toothed. Stomach strong andintestine with four loops. Gill membrane posteriorly freefrom isthmus. In rivers, marshes and brackish waters. Maximumage 6 years and total length 30 cm. Maturity in firstyear at 72 mm total length. Spawning in May and June. Absolutefecundity up to 25,800 eggs. Carnivore, food mostlyinclude fish, aquatic insects, and crustaceans.
